Esther discovered yoga during her travels, and with much the same fervor that she harnessed to help others, devoted herself to the study of Hatha yoga.

She subsequently taught at the Healy-Murphy Learning Center and further spread her influence in our city, including making a profound impact on one of our founders, Emilie Rogers.

Esther was born in San Antonio in 1918. From a young age, she displayed a passion for serving her community. Through the organizations she served, she was a voice for many who could not advocate for themselves.

Emilie and Esther

As Emilie describes, Esther not only embodied the four attributes of a yogi (friendly to all, compassion, joy and dispassion) but she was also an impressive yogi, practicing and teaching well into her 90s.

Esther felt strongly that a yoga school bearing her name should be a nonprofit, and should endeavor to serve the community as well as provide an unsurpassed yoga education. Her vision and passion for community are the driving force for all that we do at EVYS, and we are honored to uphold her legacy.
